Columbus man arrested after SWAT standoff

COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Columbus man is in jail after a Wednesday, September 16, two-and-a-half-hour standoff during which he was armed with a knife.

At about 8:20 p.m., the Columbus Police Department (CPD ) was dispatched to a home in the 1300 block of Sycamore Street for a domestic disturbance. It was reported that Brandon Kincheloe, 33, of Columbus, had threatened a family member with a kitchen knife and then fled into the residence.

Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter and began attempting to persuade Kincheloe to put down the knife and exit the home.

As CPD worked to de-escalate the situation, additional information was obtained indicating that Kincheloe had allegedly battered a male, causing minor injuries, and had threatened to batter and stab another person during an argument.

Officers also reported that the suspect threatened to stab them while refusing to comply.

The Columbus Police Department SWAT Team and crisis negotiators responded. Despite repeated efforts, Kincheloe refused to cooperate or drop the knife. Shortly before 11 p.m., SWAT personnel deployed less-lethal options, allowing officers to disarm and safely take Kincheloe into custody.

The suspect was transported to the hospital for evaluation before being remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon (two counts, Level 5 felony) and Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury (Class A misdemeanor).
