Columbus juvenile charged with murder

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Bartholomew County Prosecuting Attorney Lindsey Holden has formally charged Tyshawn Bryant, 17, with one count of Murder related to the recent investigation into events that took place on September 11 in the 3200 block of Country Brook Street North.

The Columbus Police Department (CPD) responded to the address in reference to a shooting. While en route, dispatch advised officers that someone had possibly been shot. Police were also informed that people were fleeing the area in a truck. Upon arrival, CPD found a juvenile victim (17 years old) with at least one gunshot wound. 

The teen was later pronounced deceased on the scene. 

Detectives interviewed multiple witnesses who reported that there had been a physical fight involving a group of juveniles. Tyshawn Bryant was present and is alleged to have shot the victim during the course of the fight.

Detectives contacted Bryant’s family, and Bryant later turned himself in at the Columbus Police Department.

The suspect was interviewed and supposedly admitted to firing multiple rounds and to shooting the juvenile. Bryant claimed he was only firing the gun to scare the teenager. He and two other juvenile witnesses then fled the scene. 

On Thursday, September 17, the prosecutor filed formal charges of one count of murder with the felony firearm enhancement.

The case is pending in Bartholomew Circuit Court. Judge Kelly Benjamin will set the case for an initial hearing.
