CPD investigates Friday night 'Swatting' call

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Upon receiving reports of a shooting and possible hostage situation, the Columbus Police Department (CPD) responded to a home in the 300 block of Sunset Drive on Friday, June 12, just after 9:30 p.m.

As officers responded, additional information was received that heightened concerns about the safety of those inside the residence. Officers quickly established a perimeter in the area and investigated to determine whether an active threat existed. They concluded that the reports were false.

CPD spoke with the homeowner, who was alone inside the residence, unharmed. No evidence of a hostage situation, shooting, or any other threats was found.   

The incident was determined to be a "swatting" call. Swatting is the act of making a false report of a serious emergency in an effort to generate a large law enforcement response. While officers are reacting to a false report, they are taken away from conducting other police duties.   

Lt. Alyson Eichel said, "The Columbus Police Department takes 'swatting' incidents seriously and will not tolerate conduct that puts residents, first responders, and the community at risk."
