Capt. Dave Dwyer retires from CFD

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The City of Columbus Fire Department (CFD) has announced the retirement of Captain David Dwyer after a 47-year career with the Department. Dwyer joined CFD on January 10, 1979. He retires as the most senior member of the agency with a career spanning nearly five decades.

A second-generation firefighter, Dwyer’s passion for the fire service began early, observing his father’s service with the Bedford Fire Department. As a Columbus Firefighter, Dwyer was promoted through the ranks and held several positions, including Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Fire Chief. He also served as the Department Training Officer from 1992 to 1996 and again from 2015-2019.

Columbus Fire Chief Andy Lay commended Captain Dwyer for his long-standing dedication and service to the Columbus Community and the local fire service, saying, “Captain Dwyer has demonstrated a true passion for serving others and a deep commitment to this profession that will be greatly missed. We wish Captain Dwyer a happy and healthy retirement.

Dwyer retires as the House Captain of Fire Station 2, where he oversaw three shifts, scheduling, and the documentation of training for all Station 2 personnel.

His official retirement date is May 8.
